A bag for life, not the cupboard…

If you were lucky enough to pick up one of our organic Pukka shopper bags from your local health food shop a few months back, then you’re already on the way to making a difference to the environment. That said, the only way you’ll really make a difference is if you actually remember to USE IT!

A bag is for life, not the cupboard…

Are so called ‘bags for life’ only called that because they get stuffed in the back of your cupboard for the rest of yours and our lives? Possibly, yes. We’ve all done it, got to the checkout and been asked if we need a bag. The SHAME. Where’s my trusty and so called bag for life?

And in order to be the well meaning and socially conscious individuals that we are, we ask for a ‘bag for life’ – again. But remember, these bags are for life…like a puppy.

A study by the Environment Agency in 2011 concluded that a standard LDPE bag (‘bag for life’) should be reused at least 5 times to ensure that it has a lower global warming potential than a conventional (HDPE) carrier bag.

The study also found that "the key to reducing the impact of all carrier bags is to reuse them as much as possible and where reuse for shopping is not practical, secondary reuse in application such as bin liners is beneficial… Reusing lightweight carrier bags as bin liners produces greater benefits than recycling bags due to the benefits of avoiding the production of the bin liners they replace.”

So what’s best?

If you’ve forgotten your bag for life and you’re already at the supermarket, it’s often best to accept your fate and use the plastic bags available, BUT, making sure to reuse them once you get home. It’s either that or purchase another, heavy duty bag that will take even longer to break down should it be sent to landfill. In general the more we reuse all the bags we own the less of a harmful impact it has on the world that’s around us.

Make it a habit

Use reminder notes, hang it full view by the door (or by your tea mugs!), anything that makes taking your bag with you a habit not a choice. And once you get in the habit, it’ll be like remembering to brush your teeth before bed…but with bags.

Happy shopping!
